British GT – The Season So Far

Hasn’t time flown by? We’re almost half way through another eventful British GT season. Everyone I know was teary-eyed and excited for Round 1/2 at Oulton Park, the battleships were back! Bentley fielded two Continental GT3 racers and the Nissan GT-R returned with Sir Chris Hoy in the hot seat. I was excited… but I was also on Silverstone duties so I only made it up there for race day. Round 3 was next up, Rockingham Motor Speedway always provides an exciting race and this year was no exception. The two hour race saw Rob Barff and Gary Eastwood take top honours after a genius safety car strategy put them 40 seconds up on the rest of the field. Silverstone was the stage for Round 4, the 3 hour endurance is the longest race of the season. Usually this is a tough test for teams and drivers, you wouldn’t believe it though judging from the performance of Ahmad Al-Harthy and Michael Caine. The pair drove a flawless race leading almost from start to finish.

The series is heading to Snetterton next, unfortunately I’m not following. A calendar clash with the Nurburgring 24h means I’ll miss what is sure to be another great battle.

Santa Pod

Last weekend I was invited to the opening round of the FIA/FIM European Championships. Since being approached almost a month ago I have been crossing off the calendar waiting for this weekend to come round, eager to experience a new (to me) form of Motorsport. I purposely decided not to do too much research into it, obviously I looked around for photographic inspiration, but other than that I wanted to know what drag racing was like from a new fans perspective.

With a possible 11:30h of on track action every day there was plenty to watch, the official programme combined with great race commentary made it very easy to understand the difference between classes and race types, they also kept the crowd entertained during the various rain delays (Santa Pod Mexican wave record holder right here!). The teams, drivers and media were some of the most friendly people I’ve ever met, eager to show me around the cars and talk me through how you get 8,000-plus horsepower down the track in 4 seconds. Enjoy the gallery as much as I did my weekend.

Next up is a half-season review of British GT, followed by a trip to the infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife for my first ever 24h race.
